The Antler Lamp
By You | August 13, 2007

I’ve been looking and looking for a bedside lamp for going on several years now. I finally found The One. The Antler Lamp from West Elm. Generally speaking, I find West Elm’s products to be gorgeous but overpriced. This is the first of their products that I’ve actually seen in person, so I can’t vouch for the overall quality of the pieces, but I’m guessing it must be some good stuff based on the prices and the quality of the lamp we will be discussing in a moment.
So The One arrives in two boxes. One for the base, one for the shade. Cool, right? Nice careful packaging is alway an important feature. The lamp base itself is gorgeous, well made, exactly what I thought it would be except for that it’s too big! The photos on the site show it as a bedside lamp, it looks of a normal proportion for a bedside lamp in the photos, but really it’s too big. I’m not going to return it because I love it, and have use for a lamp. But not for the bedside. Crap.
Second problem, the shade isn’t so much what I wanted. It is the same as the photos show, but somehow it doesn’t work in real life. Luckily, it happened to work on another lamp that I’ve hated the a shade on for a good five years. Yes, I know, I procrastinate.
In the end, I separated the lamp from the shade. Put the shade on a different lamp. Now I’m on the hunt for a new lampshade. So it’s a nice product, I liked it, but just doesn’t really work as it’s meant to for me. At least I’m able to adapt it rather than sending it back because I’m so in love with the base.
Remember you need to test drive things you never saw in real life before you decide about them. Don’t throw the boxes away too quickly! That’ll be Hey You! Shoppers Rule No. 6. Objects on the internet appear differently in person. Proceed with caution.
