Thrift Store Shopping
By You | August 7, 2007

This isn’t an online shopping tip, yet it’s a great one if you’re shopping in the real world. Always check the thrift stores in your area. At first I was kind of grossed out by the idea of buying used things, but if you’re talking furniture, lamps, things that don’t go on your body or near your mouth, it’s really not so bad. Just take a peek at your local thrift store and check it out — you might be surprised at what you’ll find.
The Husband and I were recently at a local church thrift store that benefits a homeless shelter and we ran into two absolutely drop dead gorgeous marble topped solid wood bombe chests for an insanely low price. These things would have easily had an original cost of a couple thousand and they wanted less than $600 for the pair. To try to buy something like them new wouldn’t even happen — they just don’t make solid wood furniture like that anymore, and if you happened to find some, the price would certainly not be within reach of the ordinary shopper.
Plus, the condition of the dressers was excellent: not a chip on the marble, all drawers clean and working, just extraordinary. Easy shipping options as they set you up with a man with a van guy and we had them in our new place the next morning. And really the part that makes you feel extra good about it all is that the money goes to a homeless shelter to help out those in need. I’d rather see that than a few more bucks in The Donald’s pocket.
That makes Hey You! Shoppers Rule No. 5 — always check your local thrift stores. You’ll be surprised at the quality and the bargains.
