    A (Not) Insider’s Tip

    By You | June 16, 2007

One of my best internet shopping tips, I think we’re only up to Hey You! Shoppers Rule No. 2, is look for the wholesale places. I think my favorite find in this regard are the many restaurant supply stores that sell to the general public through their websites. Of these, the best best is Ace Mart Restaurant Supply. I found this site about six years ago when I was looking to stock my brand new free-standing tiki bar with the best and funnest professional bar gear.

I started at all the usual box-store places and they had lots of unaunthentic expensive stuff. I then stumbled upon the world of the wholesale supply store. Tons of authentic items at a fraction of the Pottery Barn-ish prices, and actually better looking and better quality and practically infinite selection. Soon I had one of those amazing napkin and straw dispensers that looks as real as anything you’d find at your local pub. And it was less than six dollars. Much shopping for not only bar supplies, but kitchen supplies ensued. I have a kick-ass commercial cup dispenser in my kitchen that holds those 16 ounce red Dixie cups you can buy in bulk at Costo, and all other manner of totally fun, funky, and useful objects that didn’t cost the same as my mortgage.

While this post is really just focused on Ace Mart, the general lesson to be taken is that in whatever area you’re looking to stock up, go for the “insider” suppliers. They’ll often have policies that easily allow you to buy from them, you’re much more likely to find exactly what you’re looking for, and the prices are always right.

P.S. Note to self: find some bad reviews to write, don’t share all the good secrets right up front!
