    The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America

    By You | November 11, 2007

Not something you would ordinarily associate with shopping, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America is a massive resource for those caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s. They work not only to find a cure for this debilitating and fatal disease, but also to ensure that those who are suffering receive adequate and appropriate care. Watching my Nana die of this disease gave me a pretty good idea of how and why this is important. It was in 1995, and reading through this website I can see the strides that have been made in the last decade as compared to what I remember my Nana going through.

My parents had an impossible time finding an appropriate care facility for her — and this is in Southern Florida so you can only imagine the difficulties in areas less saturated with the elderly. I remember visiting her several times. In the early stages she still knew who I was, but toward the end it was clear she was lost in the past, lost to us in the present, her body living but her mind moving on. It was heart-wrenching, particularly when she stopped recognizing us. Even more horrible, though, were the patients in the first facility she was in, they were Holocaust survivors, reliving that horror over and over again in their addled brains. I was absolutely horrified for these people. This more than anything highlights the importance of research and care for people so afflicted.

What’s this doing on a shopping blog, you ask? What can you do about it? Simple, really. You can visit their eStore and shop for holiday gifts or pick up something for yourself. And this brings me to Hey You Shopper’s Rule No. 9: There are lots of charities out there with online stores. Do the rounds, check out the offerings, and purchase items from these stores if you can. You’ll not only find unique, interesting, and many times touching items, your money will be going to a good cause, not to a mega-corporation. Shopping you can feel good about, that’s what we like around here. Now go forth and do good.
